Best Practices and Challenges in UX Research for SmartTVs.

  • The Importance of UX Research in SmartTVs

  • Addressing Technology and Usability Challenges
  • Validating Remote Form Prototypes
  • Considering the Future of UX for SmartTVs
3 minutes

The evolution of SmartTVs has opened up a new dimension in UX (User Experience) research, offering both unique challenges and innovative opportunities. Over the years, I have worked with design and UX teams focused on improving the user experience on platforms such as Smart TVs and Android TV. This journey has allowed me to integrate prototypes effectively, facilitating real-time validation of solutions. With tools like Checkealos, we have optimized remote processes, applying methodologies initially conceived for mobile applications and websites, adapting them to the particularities of SmartTVs. This hands-on experience has been key to identify best practices and overcome the challenges of this constantly evolving field.

The Importance of UX Research in SmartTVs

UX research for SmartTVs cannot be a direct reflection of that for mobile or websites. The nature of interactions, which rely on remote control or voice commands, completely transforms the dynamics of use. In one of the last projects I oversaw, we faced the challenge of incorporating these differences into UX research to validate prototypes in scenarios that were as realistic as possible. This process required considering factors such as the ergonomics of the remote control and the limitations of the interaction points, very different from those offered by a touch screen.

An additional aspect is multitasking. Many users interact with their SmartTVs while performing other activities, which adds complexity to the design. Ensuring a smooth experience in this context, where attention is limited and time is critical, becomes a priority for the success of any UX project on this platform.

Understanding SmartTV Users

A central piece of UX research on SmartTVs is to deeply understand user behavior and needs. SmartTVs are not simply passive entertainment devices, but multifunctional tools that integrate on-demand content, apps and smart features. Studying how users interact with these functions, identifying usage patterns and detecting points of frustration are essential steps in designing more effective products.

For example, one of the key learnings from recent projects was that users expect fast transitions and intuitive systems, but tend to abandon if the answers are not clear or immediate. Such insights can only be gained through user-centered research that considers not only the functional aspects of the design, but also the actual contexts of use.

Addressing Technology and Usability Challenges

Technological innovations such as voice and gesture controls are exciting, but they also present significant challenges. In our testing with design teams, we noticed that many users experienced frustration due to inaccurate or slow speech recognition. This finding prompted multiple iterations, with adjustments based on real user data, to achieve a more reliable and user-friendly system.

Another major challenge is personalization. Recommendation algorithms must be accurate enough to deliver relevant content, but without overwhelming the user or appearing invasive. Balancing this aspect is key to creating an experience that users perceive as valuable and enjoyable.

Validating Remote Form Prototypes

Remote validation has revolutionized UX research on SmartTVs. At Checkealos, we adapt remote testing methodologies used in apps and websites to work on SmartTV devices. This approach allows users to interact with prototypes in their own homes, in real usage environments, gaining authentic and relevant insights.

The ability to perform these tests without the need for complex in-person setups has proven to be a game changer, not only because of the reduction in cost and time, but also because of the quality of the information obtained. Users tend to behave more naturally in their own spaces, which provides more accurate data for making design decisions.

Considering the Future of UX for SmartTVs

The future of UX on SmartTVs will be shaped by evolving technology and improved research practices. As platforms become more sophisticated, the key will be to anticipate user needs and design solutions that are intuitive, personalized and accessible.

For example, one promising direction is the exploration of more adaptive interfaces, which can dynamically adjust according to user usage patterns. In addition, integrating new technologies such as augmented reality or artificial intelligence applied to content recommendation opens up exciting possibilities for enriching the SmartTV experience.

UX research will be essential to guide this progress, ensuring that technological advances truly improve users’ lives. Throughout my career, I have learned that designing for people means going beyond technical features and considering how each interaction can provide value in the context of its daily use.
