What are user tests and how do they affect a web

A user test itself consists simply of seeing how a subject is performing a test. Test … about what? Anything that you can think of in the digital world that concerns us. What subject? It can be anyone, but if we choose one conveniently, so that it represents the population to which it belongs, it ia better than better.

What are user tests?

Also known as a usability test, user tests are given meaning by selecting a good number of ideal subjects. We say a good number because it is logical that the more subjects, the more precise the insight.

This precision in the test results is used to determine. Stealing the term from the business world, it provides us a SWOT analysis. That is, to see what weaknesses, threats, strengths and opportunities are in the object on which we perform the test.

In other words, with a user test, carried out by an ideal subject on the object to be analyzed, we will see how difficult it is to reach the objective that is expected of it. If it’s a game, take advantage of it. If it is a web, to be able to navigate the same without throwing anything of less. If it is a landing, reach the conversion.

Types of user tests

It is normal that, because of the nature of its definition, user tests are different as to the object on which they are based. It is not the same to analyze how a user behaves when browsing an online store, with his shopping cart, as it does on a landing page, desperately looking for a specific purpose.

Thus, in general, the usability tests are tremendously valuable in a large number of digital environments and scenarios, such as:

  • Web pages
  • Online shops or e-commerces
  • A/B landing tests
  • Squeeze pages
  • Purchasing abandonment audits
  • Games
  • Apps
  • Mockups
  • User flows
  • Marketing campaigns
  • Mail campaigns
  • LinkedIn pages
  • Facebook pages

All digital scenarios can be analyzed with their corresponding customized user test. The factors will change, of course: the one who tests a game does not need to fill his shopping cart, access it and make the payment, and the one that arrives at a web from Google and ends up turning his lead does not require making use of any App.

Do you see where the shots go?

How they affect a web

We return to the beginning of the article and we ask: what information I extract from the user tests?

See where he moves, what he finds difficult, how difficult it is to pay for his shopping cart, the simplicity with which he makes use of all the resources, the ease of reaching the end of the process … All this Is insider information. It is even more intuitive if the subject that makes the user test is the ideal target of the object in question.

A 43-year-old mother does not behave like her 18-year-old son. They are from different generations and their previous experience has nothing to do with it.

By this we mean that the ideal is to segment well who is tested. Then, with a sufficient sample, results are obtained that will determine the usability changes in the web.

And how does this information affect a particular page, for example?

Make a button more visible. Reduce by one step the levels that are needed to reach a particular product. Make a form bigger. Delete an item that skips, in which users click click waiting for something but nothing happens.

That is, correct everything that hinders an optimal process, understanding as a process the steps that the ideal user follows to reach their goal within the web. As simple as that.

The results after correcting all this? Undoubtedly improved conversions within the web. The problems that the users were when they entered would no longer be there. Your path will be optimized to convert. Increased user usability = increased conversions. Golden rule in the UX.
